Where a lifetime of medicine met a hidden sanctuary by the Hamilton Canal.
True health is not merely the absence of disease.
For thirty years, my world was defined by the clinical precision of Western medicine. As a Consultant Community Physician, my career was dedicated to public health, systems and data — identifying patterns of illness and treating communities from the outside in. It was rewarding, vital work, but after three decades on the front lines of healthcare, both my wife and I began to feel a deeper calling. We realised that true health isn't merely the absence of disease; it is a state of complete physical, mental and spiritual alignment.

The turning point came when an opportunity presented itself in Negombo — just a short drive from the Colombo airport, yet worlds away from its frantic energy. We found a remarkable piece of land nestled quietly alongside the historic Hamilton Canal. The moment we stepped onto the property, the ambient noise of the world faded.
We were surrounded by a dense, vibrant canopy of endemic Sri Lankan trees, their leaves filtering the sunlight and filling the air with a crisp, earthy freshness. The atmosphere was naturally serene, calm and deeply quiet. Standing there together, we knew this was the ideal canvas to build a sanctuary where people could pause, breathe and genuinely heal from the stresses of modern life.
My background was rooted in Western science, but we were standing on soil rich with a different kind of wisdom. Sri Lanka is home to two profound, time-tested healing traditions: Ayurveda, practised here for centuries, and Hela Wedakama, the ancient indigenous healing system dating back to the era of the island's legendary kings. Where Western medicine often focuses on the symptom, these ancient sciences look at the whole human being — using the natural world to restore internal balance.
We envisioned a bridge between these worlds: to marry the tranquil, restorative environment of our canal-side property with the potent, age-old wisdom of traditional Sri Lankan healing. Our goal was to create a space not just for vacationing, but for profound rejuvenation.

We designed every corner so the whisper of the wind through the branches, and the gentle movement of the canal water, remained the soundtrack of the guest experience.

We broke ground with that singular vision — carefully preserving the endemic trees and letting the natural landscape dictate the flow of the resort. The vision resonated deeply. People seeking an escape from the frantic pace of the modern world found their way to our gates, discovering exactly what we had felt the first day we stood on the property.
The venture flourished, turning our shared dream into a profound success. That is how a lifetime of medical practice and a beautiful, hidden sanctuary by the Hamilton Canal converged, and Ayur Ayur Ayurveda Retreat was born.
